History
  • 1973 – First library opened in the old Powell-Berry-Powell Medical Center with Carrie Holloway serving as the first librarian. The library is the result of work by a group of citizens interested in securing a library for the city.

 

  • 1983 – The 10th year of library operation and the city assists in opening more rooms in the building for library use. November 13 was selected as the library anniversary date.

 

  • 1988 – Jim Cooper, director of the West Georgia Regional Library system, speaks to the VR board about how to set up a building fund for a new library. Madelyn Morgan resigns as manager and Shirley Tanner takes her place.

 

  • 1992 – Library moves from Carroll Road facility to 70 Horace Luther Drive. Facility opened to the public on Monday, January 13. Shirley Tanner resigns as manager and is replaced by Suzanne Watson.
     
  • 2015 - Construction begins on new library, in partnership with Tanner Hospital, located off Hwy 61 next to Tanner Hospital.
