NOTICE REGARDING SENIOR EXEMPTION FOR 2017

Posted on Wednesday June 21, 2017

In late 2016, it was discovered that the City of Villa Rica property tax exemption for seniors was being treated inconsistently by Carroll County and Douglas County.  The exemption was initially intended to give an exemption for low-income seniors.  For some period of time, the exemption was imposed correctly in both counties.  At some point, however, the process changed for each county, which resulted in an inequity for the seniors in the City.  The exemption was deemed unconstitutional and void.  Therefore, there is no senior exemption for City of Villa Rica property tax for this current tax year.

On January 18, 2017, the City Council approved a Senior Homestead Exemption and approved a resolution to request the Georgia Legislature to authorize a referendum for this exemption.  Governor Deal signed the bill on May 3, 2017.  The City is now authorized to include the revised exemption on the ballot on November 7, 2017. If approved by voters, the City anticipates the exemption to be in place for the 2018 property tax assessments.
